Counselor

Terry Jaworski

Experience
I am a licensed psychotherapist with 35 years of experience working in private practice and Community Mental Health. I’ve worked in residential settings, crisis intervention and outpatient clinics providing individual and group therapy. I specialize in helping individuals suffering with depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, Borderline Personality Disorder and chronic pain. I enjoy teaching mindfulness and acceptance techniques and find them to be a good adjunct to cognitive behavioral therapy and psychotherapy.

Philosophy
I believe that our true nature is comprised of awareness and compassion. In terms of individual therapy, this compassionate awareness is directed towards ourselves. Instead of standing apart from ourselves and pushing ourselves to be better or different, the goal of therapy is to make friends with who we are already.

Experience
I have been working in the fields of social work, mental health therapy and psychiatric care for 33 years. In that time I have found collaborative work with adolescents and their surrounding families to be the most rewarding endeavor. I have worked with chronic mentally ill adults in both residential and hospital settings. I have worked with youth in crisis care. I have done outreach family therapy as a part of the family preservation movement. I have been a contract provider for reconciliation services. I have worked with teenage boys in an in-patient substance abuse program providing metal health services. I have been a Washington state social worker. I have worked with kids who have been diagnosed on the autistic spectrum and their families. I have been employed in therapeutic foster care. I have maintained a small private practice for the past ten years.

Philosophy
I utilize a practical approach in my work which focuses on basic skill building; ie behavior modification, anger/mood management, communication/negotiation skills, and cognitive restructuring. I try to make therapy a collaborative experience and believe clients should treat themselves as they would a best friend. My experience as a meditation practitioner informs my work and reminds me to be open and non-judgmental to the needs, joys, aspirations and pain of my clients.
